BOB - Conics

I found it to be very helpful to have those classes where we took the pieces of paper and created the hyperbola's, elipses, parabola's. It created a clearer perspective for me and I was able to see the patterns and connections almost right away. The only problem I've had was with the equations. I wasn't able to remember what the numbers represented. But I think I'll be able to figure it out after I do some questions for practice.

BOB on Combinatorics

Despite what other people have said in their bob's about this unit, I would have to disagree. This unit was by far the only unit that actually seemed fun for me. Yes! Math is fun again! Perhaps it was because I scribed for this unit and got a clearer understanding when I had to explain it. And this unit is based mostly on logic, which I didn't have too much trouble with. the only thing I found confusing were the poker questions. I don't know how to play the card game, but that isn't my main problem. The questions had a lot of things for you to consider. For example: the suits, faces, how many of a certain suit or face in a poker hand, how many cards should not be included in your hand, etc. Then figuring it all out was hard to follow. Also, I had trouble with which formula to use for certain questions. Whether I should use the Pick formula or the Choose one. Those are the problems I came across with this unit.

Another problem I'll have to face tomorrow is doing the test! I tend to blank out once it's right in front of me. I hope that won't happen this time.

Flickr Assignment - Transformations

This is my flickr assignment.

BOB

I think this unit about Trig Identities was a hard one to grasp. There are a lot of identities that i haven't recognized yet, but I'll be sure to get them down in time for the test. The thing I'm most concerned about is my algebra. I tend to make minor mistakes whenever proving an identity. That's all I really need to clear up though. Everything else, I hope, will all get better with more practice.

BOB

I'm happy to say that I've made some changes for the better during this unit. In the beginning I was lost and the things that Mr. K was teaching wasn't sticking to my mind. After a couple of visits with Mr. K during lunch hour, I was able to really understand the concept of this unit. Working together with my classmates in our groups was also very helpful since they would sometimes have the same questions as me. I also felt more comfortable asking them questions and working together on problems and talking with them made learning better. I hope everyone does a great job on tomorrow's test !

Inverses

This is Mary Ann, your scribe for today!

Inverse functions can be solved in more than one way. Like the block of wood that Mr. K has, you can look at each of it's different sides but it's all the same block. The same goes with a function. You can figure out the inverse of a function by solving it numerically, algebraically, or graphically, and you'll end up with the same answer for all of them.

The whole idea of inverting a function is simple. All you really need is an input and an output. When the function is inverted the input and output switch. OR the output undoes what the input did. Mr. K told us a story as an example of how this inversion works. The original function would be Baby Play. clean room would be the input and the messy room would be the output. But once the parent cleans up the room, the room goes from a messy room to a clean room. This is the inverted function. Notice how they switched? Here's a diagram from the slide for better explanation.






Numerically

To figure out the inverse of an ordered pair ( x , y ) what happens is that the domain becomes the range, and the range because the domain. Domain being x and Range being y.



Algebraically



In this slide we solved the equations' inverse, algebraically. The y and the x switched. But an equation must be written as y = _____ . So we isolated the y. This same equation can be solved by using the table of values, but when doing so, you must undo the last thing you did to get the inverse.

*note: some functions cannot be solved with the table of values.

Graphically

When sketching a function on a graph, it's inverse can be found by switching obvious points. On the graph below, for example, It's points are (-6,-3) , (1,5) , (9,6). To find the inverse, the x's become the y's. y's become the x's.





The function also flipped over the line y = x . Any points that lay on this line will not change because even when those points are inverted, it'll still be the same.
